How To Use Insect Repellent Clothing As Part Of A Complete Protection Strategy

Insect repellent clothing can help keep you safe from insect bites in areas where these are a serious threat, but they can never be a complete solution unless you make sure your entire body is completely covered at all times. While this is theoretically possible, it is unlikely to be something many people will want to do. It will eliminate the possibility of communicating with anyone who is not within shouting distance, and using a telephone or a wireless handset to keep in touch will be impossible. You would also not be able to eat or drink except in areas completely covered by nets, and as keeping hydrated is vitally important in hot climates, this is unlikely to be a good idea.

It is vital to not just think about insect repellent clothing, but to plan out your entire system for staying healthy in dangerous circumstances. As well as clothing, you will need insect repellent spray or cream, and nets are also essential if you are going to be going into mosquito infested areas. Permethrin treated clothing can do much to keep annoying insects away from you, but complete protection from mosquito bites is only possible if exposed skin is also treated.

It is often not easy to choose between the many chemical based products and natural alternatives, but if you under serious risk of mosquito bites then a chemical solution will give you the highest degree of protection. The most effective chemical you can use is DEET, and there are very few reported cases of serious injury or illness resulting from DEET use. The chemical does have side effects, especially with mental clarity and sleep patterns, so there is every reason to minimize the amount which is used.

This can basically be achieved in two ways, and insect repellent clothing can play a significant part in this. Firstly, you can use insect repellent clothing to cover as much of your body as possible, leaving as little skin exposed as you can. This can cause problems in extreme heat, but if you were going to be subjected to the possibility of sunburn you need to cover your skin anyway.

The other important consideration is to use a solution which makes the best use of the DEET which is present, minimizing the amount needed. The Ultrathon solution, which was developed by the military, allows for that to happen. Combine this with effective Permethrin covered clothing, and you have a complete system for when you are outside in the heat and the sun. It is still best to use complete protective netting when you are inside and it is possible to do so, as you can then reduce your exposure to chemicals still further. This is how you can create a complete system of protection around your insect repellent clothing.
